From staff
Big Jim will
returned to work today.
The steam whistle blew at 12:05 p.m. at its new home,
located at the JEA water plant at First and Main streets in
Springfield. It will maintain a daily schedule of blowing at 7
a.m., noon, 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.

The Southside
Generating station, shown here on Oct. 26, 2001, was
shut down last year. Plans call for the land to be
redeveloped.

| Big Jim
previously was located at the Southside Generating Station.
When the JEA decommissioned the plant in 2001, the utility
moved Big Jim to Springfield. Big Jim was moved to the
Southside Generation Station in 1966, according to JEA.
The whistle can be heard for miles and has heralded such
events as the Great
Fire of 1901 and the end of two world wars.
